McCarthy's were the first dealers appointed in South Africa to distribute Lexus. In 1992 when the McCarthy Toyota Midrand Dealership was being built, an opportunity was taken to facilitate a separate section of the showroom as well as a separate small service department for the sale of the Lexus LS400. This was the top of the range Lexus for which McCarthy’s were initially given sole distribution rights in South Africa. Being one model only, it was not feasible to extend the dealership distribution so Midrand Lexus was the sole seller of the vehicle and it was serviced through satellite service centres in each of the major centres in South Africa. As more products were introduced to the Lexus range, the satellite service outlets converted to both the sale and servicing of Lexus and further dealers outside McCarthys were appointed as Lexus dealers.
Until recently Lexus was sold and serviced through existing Toyota outlets, but following a new strategy worldwide, Lexus S.A. have adopted the principle of separate stand alone facilities for all Lexus dealerships. Our first stand alone facility was built in July 2007 at Kingsmead in Durban and Lexus Midrand Opened its doors in November 2007. A new Lexus site in Lynnwood Road has been identified in Pretoria and the establishment of a dealership there will be complete in September 2008.
All Lexus sold worldwide are manufactured only in Japan to very exacting standards and today Lexus is the biggest selling luxury vehicle range in the USA. The model range covers the luxury segments from the small IS250 through to the medium sized GS300, to the large LS460. The LS460 was recently voted “World Car” by leading journalists from across the globe. A New hybrid Lexus’ range will be launched in South Africa soon.
